The Parents

Ernesto

E woke up to an empty bed and he buried his face in the pillow, recalling the day before. His stomach dropped. He fucked it up. He’d broken the bubble of their first meeting by going to work and then insisting they go to the police. That entire incident had ripped open old wounds for Brian. Even so, E wouldn’t regret that, even if it meant losing the remaining time that weekend they were supposed to spend together. E had been afraid that after the traumatic experience of the day, Brian wouldn’t take well to E’s confession about the club, even after shocking him with his easy acceptance of E’s neurodiversity. E had had a choice of hiding his proclivities and sex life until they got to know each other better, or putting it all on the table so that Brian would have a clear picture of him. The conversation, as well as the evening snuggle on the sofa, had gone surprisingly well. They’d stayed up late watching the movie, and then another one, commenting, talking, staying close. It had been perfect. When Brian had fallen asleep, E had tried to lift him up to carry him to the bedroom, but he overestimated his strength, leading to a rude wake up for Brian. They’d ended up laughing and wrapping around each other under the covers. Maybe it had been perfect only for E. Maybe Brian had realised that E wasn’t for him and left early in the morning to avoid an awkward conversation.

E’s over-analysing skidded to a halt when he heard a clatter. Pans? Plates? He flipped on his back and the smell of melted butter drifted into his nose. Heart filled with hope, E sprang from the bed so fast he tripped on his own feet. Thankfully, he braced himself on the doorframe, avoiding faceplanting on the wooden floor. He sprinted through the sitting room and burst into the kitchen, chest heaving.

Brian looked up at him, saucepan with melted butter in hand, and grinned. “Morning, sleeping beauty. I hope you don’t mind me raiding your kitchen.”

“No, I…I thought you were gone,” E croaked, his voice still groggy from sleep.

Wiping sleep from his eyes with a fist, he took in Brian’s defined, muscular frame, bare chest, and tight, black boxer briefs covering his perfectly-rounded arse. At that moment, he knew that he’d remember this view of Brian, casually making breakfast in his kitchen, for the rest of his life. He felt like he conjured a perfect morning as if it was a dream his mind brought to reality.

E sagged onto one of the stools, his eyes locking on four poached eggs simmering in a bigger saucepan.

“After you tried to carry me when I fell asleep? How could I leave?” Brian chuckled.

E buried his face in his hands. “I’m sorry about that.” He groaned with embarrassment. “You’re not hurt?” He lifted his gaze to see Brian add three yolks into the blender E used every day to make healthy shakes.

Brian moved effortlessly, looking well-practiced as he added some lemon juice and salt.
